Monitor
« on: Nov. 16, 2009, 03:03:40 PM »
So I currently have a 22" widescreen samsung monitor (2ms refresh with 1680x1050 resolution). It's starting to die, so I'm looking at getting something new.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I would prefer something the same size & resolution that's also good for gaming. I don't see any reason to get anything bigger than what I already have.

Then you clearly haven't used a 24" - I used one in a senior lab at university and now I have 1 for both computers.

True, I haven't used anything larger. I'm going to try to stick with a 24" so I don't get spoiled. :P I think I'm going w/the Samsung XL2370. It has LED backlighting and seems pretty snappy for gaming. Hopefully the LED lighting will lead to a longer life.

It gets good reviews here:

For future reference these people seem to put a crap ton of time into reviewing monitors. This thread is overly detailed: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=39226

I went with the 2233rz mostly because it can run at 120hz instead of the standard 60. I'll find out soon enough how much of a difference that makes.

It got positive marks:

Let me know how that goes. 120Hz is butter, but some people get freaked out by it.

Just make sure you read into any Samsung you are interested in before you buy it - I have one on my wife's computer and it hums like crazy if the brightness is below 95.  Hopefully this is no longer a problem on their newer models.

Got my monitor in yesterday. The colors aren't the best and the back-light bleeds a little bit on the top & bottom, but I bought it for the 120hz factor. It's much faster than my old monitor. It's so much nicer than 60hz.

This thread seems to cover LCD's pretty well...
